Kyutaro Horikita, the cleaning expert of Kurokado Private High School, finds a maiden sleeping in an old room on campus. She is transfer student Fumi Nishioka, and like Kyutaro, she has a talent for cleaning. However, the tall, dark, and handsome Kyutaro is also a “Sweeper,” someone who cleans away negative energy from people's heart. Fumi becomes his apprentice who will one day awaken as a Queen. Now, comes the second part of their story.
Queen's Quality, Vol. 2 (Chapters 6 to 10) finds Fumi and Kyutaro trying to move forward. Now, they have a job. The high school teacher, Yuko Hayashi, has a mind that is infected with negative energy in the form of horrible insects, so Fumi and Kyutaro have to travel to “The Inside.” There, they will sweep her mind clean, but bug handler, Ataru, has something to say about this mission. Is he trying to turn Fumi into the “Black Queen,” and what happens if the “White Queen” shows up?
THE LOWDOWN: The Queen's Quality manga is a sequel to the manga, QQ Sweeper. The three-volume QQ Sweeper is offbeat, and does not show the darker side of its narrative until the second half of the series. Queen's Quality is less offbeat and plays with the dark side of being a “Sweeper.”
Queen's Quality Graphic Novel Volume 2 is an engaging read for two reasons. First, creator Kyousuke Motomi delves into how the hurt and the pain, bad experiences, and tragedy of childhood can stay with someone into adult, creating a person who is full of dark thoughts, fear, and negativity. Motomi does not hold back and digs deep into this subject matter.
Secondly, Motomi also explores Fumi's fractured memories and unsettled future. Will she or won't she – be a bad queen or a good queen? Or will she turn out to be someone else? This invests the reader in Fumi, and I think this new series is good at leaving the readers wanting more.
I READS YOU RECOMMENDS: Fans of Kyousuke Motomi's QQ Sweeper will want to read the Shojo Beat title, Queen's Quality.
