Ares follows his son Alex which is also the god of fear Phobos to the secret hide out of Nick Fury, former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. which has been replaced by H.A.M.M.E.R. employers of the god of war. Nick Fury is training Alex as one of his secret weapons against H.A.M.M.E.R.  Will Ares be able to terminate Fury and his band and bring back his son with him as he continues to serve H.A.M.M.E.R.  and Norman Osborn?

It seems that I cannot review any Marvel comic book these days without mentioning Norman Osborn. The guy is everywhere. Right, Dark Avengers is his main squeeze. My apologies. Well, at least this issue. Osborn took a back seat to Ares and knowing Bendis, this kind of subplot and backstory is bound to come back and haunt the reader in a good way. The actual set up of the meeting with Nick Fury and Ares was not exactly well done. The pages did not seem interesting, but the conclusion were better than expected.

The artwork is responsible in part for my incapacity to really get into this series although Bendis does put some of his best work in there. I’m not sure the zig zagged layout is the best for such a story. It makes everything confusing and a chore to read. Considering that Bendis puts so many little speech bubbles all over the place, this does not help the storytelling at all. The artist is fine, but he should stick to a regular format and drop the experimentation.

Rating: 7.5/10
