In Sinistra, a young comic book illustrator hurts his hand but finds out that by using a special pen with his other hand, he can create marvellous artwork that allows him to get back on track and become rich. But there is neighbouring girl looking at him and realizing slowly that what this comic book illustrator creates has a tendency to take a life of its own. How dangerous is it to draw a demon?
This short French film is simple to grasp and shows what a lot of comic book artists, dependent on their hands and health have to go through. Start today, most hated person the next day, the comic book and the fantasies that inhabit all who enjoy this medium are explicitly exposed in this film. The most pressing question, of course, is what why, do men draw? Do they draw to recreate an ideal reality or just for art’s sake?
This film was shot on a low budget. So the effects are not extensive and the film quality not the best. However, the staging and pacing are entertaining enough to forgive the poor production values of this film.
7/10
