Captain Marvel confronts both Mr. Mind and Dr. Sivana to save his sister and perhaps the world from an unearthly invasion. This is the final chapter in a miniseries that gives its own unique spin on the origin of Captain Marvel. Written and drawn by Smith, the creator of the highly-praised "BONE" series, this issue has many of the good and bad qualities found in his earlier work. Like "BONE" it is aimed at all-ages but has enough charm and suspense to keep both kids and adults interested. Billy Batson, his sister Mary and most of the supporting cast, like Tawky Tawny, are likeable and engaging without coming off as buffoonish, smart-alecky or unnaturally intelligent. Most of the story shows Billy and Mary Batson in their human forms, not as superheroes so their situation seems even more threatening. On the other hand, Smith seems to shy away from excessive action or violence. It is almost as if he does not want to scare his young readers too much. There are a few scenes of Cap in battle, and they are stirring scenes. But they are far too short. Most other creators would love a chance to show a superhero in action against some truly terrifying monsters. But here, the superheroics are almost an afterthought. In addition, too many plot developments seem a bit contrived, making our heroes' victory too easy. The villain, Sivana, is ill-used and poorly-depicted. He is nothing more than a dwarfish, government bureaucrat, trying to exploit the situation for his own agenda. He definitely isn't the super-scientist who once threatened the entire world. Frankly, Sivana hasn't done too well in recent decades. Although comic readers are suppose to see him as Captain Marvel's number one foe, he is never presented too impressively-- in contrast to Black Adam or Mr. Mind. One strong point however is the artwork: simple, yet gorgeous, without all the flash or excessive detailing of many newer artists. It would be nice to see Smith do more with the character. It is a pity that nothing will likely come out of this re-imagining of Captain Marvel, seeing as how DC already has too many versions of "Shazam" out there. Three and a half out of five stars.
