Review: Justice League #25

An ancient evil from the history of the Green Lantern Corps is destined to resurrect on Earth. As the League challenges the resurrected villain intent on turning the people of Earth into his army of darkness, Batman listens to a history lesson from… someone. He knows, I do not.

She speaks of an endless cycle of the Universe re-inventing itself, with ever-so-subtle changes each time. She speaks of Crises and Rebirths, suggesting an all-powerful being controlling these events, a possible Prima Dio. She also speaks of a coming Great Darkness. Long-time Legion fans are all too familiar with what that means.

For fans of the Justice League, this is the current version of the classic team, in perfect form. It’s typical done-in-one story (like the good old days) that befits an anniversary issue. But’s also a chapter in a much bigger narrative. No doubt much of the story has already played out by now, though the Rebirth era of the DC Universe continues.

The artwork by Tom Derenick is rendered in what I consider to be DC’s house-style. It’s variations on the work of artists such as Dick Giordano and José Luis Garcia Lopez, but developed further. It has a classic look that grows in multiple directions by today’s comic book artists. It’s comforting and refreshing, like your favorite pair of jeans.
