Daredevil # 98
Marvel Comics
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Artists: Michael Lark, Stefano Gaudino

It’s Daredevil to the rescue to save his wife from the lunatic Gladiator. Under arrest in a police officer’s car, Daredevil must escape and reach his apartment in time. Will Mia become the third Daredevil love interest to die a horrible death at the end of one of her lover’s villain?

Although entertaining this issue was not as exciting as previous ones in Brubaker and Lark’s run. Knowing that the Gladiator’s goal is simply to attract Daredevil to a confrontation and doesn’t really want to kill Mia takes away from the suspense. There is a sense of desperation in Daredevil that can be felt as he rushes to save his wife. However, the other subplots introduced indicate that the Gladiator is but a small chapter in Daredevil’s life and that Brubaker intends on taking this entire storyline further. Let’s hope it all makes sense by the time Daredevil #100 appears.

On another note, I grow tired of using the plot device of Senior police officers respecting Daredevil and stopping their junior compatriots from shooting him. Can we think of something else to get Daredevil out of nasty predicaments?

Lark and Gaudino continue to create artwork that complements Brubaker’s plot very well. I do have one caution though. While their work is consistent, when compared to Alex Maleev, it feels somewhat inferior. Thankfully, what they lack in polished looks, they make up in storytelling - one of Maleev’s weakness.

7/10
