Hot off the heels of the popular War and Peace mini-series, Pat Lee hands the "Robots in Disguise" torch off to up-and-coming penciler superstar Don Figueroa. Featuring art from two of the most popular TRANSFORMERS artists, this special issue promises even more TRANSFORMERS thrills, chills, and spills as well as revelations behind SHOCKWAVE, SCOURGE, and the most diabolical DECEPTICON of 'em all-the mighty MEGATRON!
This wasn't a bad lead into the new series. For the most part it was narrated, with just a little character interaction at the end. If you missed the last mini, most of the blanks get filled in for you, but a lot more questions need answering. We learn that someone has just been born (created), oh and they are familiar. We also discover that there is another race out there and they have plans for the Transformers. The thing that I found a problem was the fact that the word boxes kept changing colour which made it hard to see the words. And so they didn't take up as much room, they compressed them, which made the words rather small.
I have to say that after the good job Lee did in the last mini, it seemed that Figueroa pencils here were rather flat, stiff and in places rushed. The lines seemed really heavy as well, which made the characters look disconnected from the page. And the other thing that disappointed me on the art front this time round was that the colouring seemed off. Everything seemed too bold. It just seemed the subtleness had gone this time around.
