Rated “T+” for “Older Teen”

He was a shy, ordinary college student.  Ken Kaneki studied Japanese literature at Kamii University.  This book-loving freshman was excited to go on a date with the beautiful Rize Kamishiro, but he did not know that she was a Ghoul.  They look like humans and live among us, but Ghouls crave human flesh.  Soon, Kaneki finds himself a hybrid, trapped between the worlds of Ghouls and humans.

As Tokyo Ghoul, Vol. 12 (Chapters 112 to 121) opens, the Ghouls of the 4th Ward come under attack by the formidable Special Investigator Kisho Arima of the Commission of Counter Ghouls (CCG).  Meanwhile, thanks to the taciturn Renji Yomo, Kaneki finally gets a long-awaited reunion with a special someone, but the reunion is not at all what he expected.  Plus, Kaneki has an important man-to-man talk with Yoshimura, the Ghoul leader who has mentored him, and he learns the secrets of Yoshimura's past.

THE LOWDOWN:  Visiting the Tokyo Ghoul manga is like entering an actual world of mystery.  Sometimes, that world certainly seems real to me.  The world of the Ghouls is so alluring that I am afraid of its threats, but I am also intrigued.

Tokyo Ghoul Volume 12 is one of the more talkative volumes of the series.  The ten chapters contained in Vol. 12 are like battle manga, but words are the weapons and tools of conflict.  Here, conversation is also about resolution and decision-making, and creator Sui Ishida makes these ten chapters mostly quiet, but not low key.  Fans will find this volume to be pivotal, and new readers should consider it a reason to join the club of people who love this thoughtful flesh-eating fantasy tale.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans looking for a different kind of dark fantasy graphic novel series will want to devour VIZ Signature's Tokyo Ghoul.
