Best-selling novelist Scott Smith adapts his second book, The Ruins for the big screen, just as he did with his debut novel, A Simple Plan. The Ruins follows a group of friends who become entangled in a brutal struggle for survival after visiting a remote archaeological dig in the Mexican jungle where they discover something deadly living among the ruins.
Best friends Amy (Jean Malone) and Stacy (Laura Ramsey) are enjoying the bright sun, warm waters, and sandy beaches that beckon countless young Americans seeking inexpensive fun to Mexico. Along for the fun are their very different boyfriends, Stacy’s focused med student boyfriend, Jeff (Jonathan Tucker), and Amy’s free-spirited Eric (Shawn Ashmore). Near the end of their vacation, they travel into the lush Mexican jungle to visit some ancient Mayan ruins, but upon their arrival, a frightening event forces the travelers to the top of the crumbling stone structure. There, they discover a ruthless evil out to destroy them.
