Over the course of these first twelve issues of the relaunched Lucifer from Vertigo Comics written by Holly Black and penciled by Lee Garbett, a new mythology and status quo has been established for the long term Sandman spinoff character. The sky is seemingly the limit for the devil now under Black and Garbett's guidance, and it's going to be one hell of a ride from here on out.

A new detante is established between the reborn Presence (whom has little in common with its previous incarnation) and all of creation, which was scheduled for destruction, yet again. Lucifer, of course is the broker of the deal. The new peace is not established without the loss of some (ethereal) blood, but now that the big problems are settled, for the present at least, Lucifer can get on with more pressing matters, like rekindling his and Mazikeen's love affair.

Black and Garbett continue to be the perfect team for crafting the further adventures of Lucifer. Lucifer himself might say, in this issue, "...I'm all bad side," but Black infuses the character with at least a modicum of honor, capable of at least lust (if not love) where Mazikeen is concerned, so he can't be "all bad side." Nevertheless, Black does keep him menacing in nature, but like Milton's Satan of Paradise Lost, none the less interesting. When you mix Black's personification of the devil with Garbett's dark and moody pencil work, well...they say the devil is in the details and the details here never looked better.

Lucifer moves into the post set up stage of Black's smart take on the character, and the devil's future never looked brighter.
