Best Writer: Scott Snyder

This has been a big year for Scott Snyder. Starting with his success on his creator-owned series American Vampire, he has continually risen and is now a top creator at DC Comics. This year he turned Gotham City upside down with his “Court of the Owls” arc for Batman. His relaunch of Swamp Thing took us deeper into the mind of Alec Holland as he debated whether to escape his past or take responsibility as the Swamp Thing. Snyder has a fetish for horror stories and his flair for terror appears in all facets of his storytelling, whether it is by turning all of Gotham City against the Caped Crusader or by allowing the menacing Rot to threaten to consume all that Swamp Thing cares for.  DC Comics has finally decided to treat their Batman property with the same intelligence and relevance that Christopher Nolan treated DC Comics' on-screen counterpart. Edgy, smart, intricate, and powerful Batman stories are now the norm, not the exception, under Snyder and at least one of their big two properties is worth reading.  Every month, Snyder makes the worst nightmares a reality for our favorite heroes-- and we love him for it.

Runner-Up: Jonathan Hickman
Before this year, writer Jonathan Hickman was relegated to being the writer that your LCS counter-jockey read but the wider audience did not. That all changed in 2012 as Hickman is consistently on your comic store shelves. There was The Secret, Fantastic Four, Manhattan Projects, FF, and now…all eyes are on Hickman as he gets his big break writing Marvel's most popular heroes, The Avengers.  Hickman hasn’t ‘sold-out‘ either, pumping out excellent and original creator-owned content on top of his intricate work as one of the leading Marvel architects.  As fans of his who, like myself, were reading him during his Nightly News days know, it’s only going to get crazier and better from here.

As for the On-Screen, here's the Best Comic Adaptation of 2012!
