Birds of Prey #97
DC Comics
Writer: Gail Simone
Penciller: Paulo Siqueira
Inks: Robin Riggs

The Society of Villains definitely wants to offer a “college education” to Black Alice, the all-powerful witch who can steal others’ powers. But the Birds of Prey won’t let that happen. Whom will win this contest and live to tell the tale? Only Black Alice knows.

It’s always fun to see the Birds of Prey fight other meta humans, as we know they don’t have the manpower to deal with such threats easily. I enjoyed Black Canary’s comments on Batman’s love affair with Talia, although she’s ill place to comment on such things, after dating Ra’s Al Ghul earlier in this series. It’s easy to see how Black Alice feels about meta humans, although I wish we won’t have to see more of her in a while. There are repercussions to what happened here in other series, so I’m curious to see if other writers, post Crisis II will pick up on that, or just ignore it as usual.

The artwork is improving, though at times, it doesn’t look good. That’s the advantage of an inexperience team like Siqueira and Riggs. You can see them grow month after month and know that eventually there will be a payoff. Their inconsistent work doesn’t bother me at all. I particularly like the fact that they’ve finally distanced themselves from Ed Benes’ work and are finding their own voices. At least, the girls look good!

7/10
