Spies around the world are being killed off. Hawkeye and Mockingbird are on the case. But as they travel to the outreaches of Siberia, they encounter the Black Widow, whom the Russian super hero team, the Supreme Soviet think is the chief suspect. How will Hawkeye cope with his two former lovers in a case that could mean the death of each of them?

McCann wrote the last mini-series that paired Hawkeye and Mockingbird after the Secret Invasion. It was a cool mini-series that kinda reunited the former lovers and married couple. This status had been pursued and continued in the various Avengers’ series that featured the characters. But here, it seems that the couple is back to a “it’s complicated” status. So far, the former relationship between Hawkeye and the Black Widow has not really come into play, but it’s probably gonna come later. The story is a good one and shows the skills of each characters. Mockingbird here would normally come off as lightweight next to the Black Widow. Here, she holds her ground and proves she’s not substitute. She has the brain of the group. Hawkeye is himself; cocky. The Black Widow is enigmatic as usual. It like the characterization.  This story is off to a good start and I like the plot too. It’s convincing.

Lopez worked on the previous series featuring Mockingbird and Hawkeye. I like that he’s given the art chores again. It keeps everything consistent as he knows the most of the main characters already. He differentiates the Black Widow from Mockingbird quite well too. She has high cheekbones and her gaze looks tired. I like that. Of course the rest of his work on this issue is spotless and good looking. This series seems like it’s gonna be a winner from a team that cares about the characters they work with. I want to read more from them.

Rating: 9.5 /10
