Courtney tries to stop Akira from murdering the rest of 140 but she is too late as the nefarious plot unravels. Dave has now listened to the leopard in his mind and become the leader of a Russian gang, promising three million dollars to anyone who will follow him instead of Vassily. By the end of the issue, only 86 will remain.

This issue was confusing because as the climax of the series all of the plots just speed up and explode all at once. Having only started to read this series at issue 11, did not help my understanding. However, what can be said is that even through the momentous events, the characters seem as driven and as personable as ever. It’s a good comic that I will have to revisit entirely later when it’s completely reprinted.

This is the problem with maxi-series like this one and why Vertigo Comics might be in trouble. There are no easy jumping points into such series and late comers either have to search older issues, get confused as they jump on the bandwagon, wait for the trade paperback reprint, or skip the entire comic entirely. There are no ways around series like Unfollow and the Sheriff of Babylon because they are designed as self-contained comics without any jumping point.

Mike Dowling’s art is good but his impressionist take on airplanes and gear is weird. The numerous aircraft in this comic looked like gigantic pieces of mud. This loose sketchy style works for characters and environments but not technological artifacts. I was a bit confused about the location of the camera crew in the big explosion. It appears that they were flying above at first and then that they were on the ground with the other cult members.

I have one minor gripe with the lettering. The way that Clem Robins displayed quotes was off in a few instances. He was having an off-page character speaking. Midway, we saw this character on the page. He never closed off the quotation marks of the previous off-page narrations.

Rating: 7 /10
