Uncanny X-Men #17 Review

The Phoenix Five have discovered that they've bitten off more than they can chew...almost...by taking the fight to Mr. Sinister. Getting an assist from some of the other X-Men, especially Psylocke and Magneto, (that really ends up not being needed), and barely snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, The Five finally manage to pass the ultimate judgement upon an X-Men foe that has been a thorn in their side for ages.
I've been following Kieron Gillen's run on Uncanny X-Men
for a while and, like I did when I learned that Victor Gischler was leaving X-Men
, I fear for the future of quality X-stories. The franchise is in great hands with Brian Wood, Jason Aaron, and the soon to be X-scribe Brian Michael Bendis, but Gillen's penchant for breathing new life into old and stale characters like Mr. Sinister has been a joy to read. The wringer that he puts The Phoenix Five through in their confrontation with Sinister has been nothing short of brilliant. It's hard to build conflict into the story of characters who are basically gods. While it makes me bewail the fact that we'll not see anymore Gillen penned stories featuring my beloved X-Men, I cannot wait to see him unleash his brilliance upon Iron Man
I've also followed Daniel Acuna's art for some time now and I'm always amazed at his unique style and the fact that he continues to deliver the same quality of work issue after issue. His masterful use of color, tone and body language is unparallelled.
, as a series, is winding down once again. We're still going to be treated to some great Marvel Comics stories from Gillen, just not Marvel Comics' X-Men stories. Savor them while you still can.
