It’s rare for a franchise to appeal to me in the way that Spice and Wolf does. Every facet of the franchise, whether it be the anime or the original novels on which it is based, has found its way to my heart. Even so, it’s the manga that I hold the most affection for. Yen Press licensed the title a short time ago after the success of its novelization, and while the wait between volumes has been unbearable, the stunning imagery and quality of writing makes the series an absolute must read.

Volume 4 picks up right where the last book left off with Lawrence in a heated negotiation with a dealer of pepper, however when Holo suspects a ruse, the tables quickly turn. With his ruse revealed, the man quickly begins to backpedal, allowing Lawrence the opportunity to negotiate a better deal.

Afterward, the bulk of the volume deals with the pair traveling from one destination to the next while both flirt and trade barbs to pass the time. They eventually come across a character that was introduced last volume in Norah, whose innocence provides an intriguing inverse to the playful Holo. The character is a timid contrast to Holo’s domineering personality, though sadly there is little interaction between the two. Lawrence instead finds himself in the position of middle man, as he struggles with protecting Holo’s identity as well as tempering the wolf god’s urges to harass Norah.

Once again Holo steals the show with her roguish behavior, constantly playing on Lawrence’s insecurities. Despite the young merchant’s best attempts to suppress his emotions, His facials and genuine surprise as a result of her actions is what cements their chemistry. Without much of a story guiding the volume, Holo’s personality takes center stage, with much of the dialogue consisting of the wily wolf wreaking havoc on poor Lawrence.

As always, the artwork of the series is top notch. The scratchy line-work belies the focus on detail contained within each panel. The character’s faces are expressive and gorgeous to behold. In terms of art, few series can compare.

The fourth volume of Spice and Wolf is another wonderful excursion into low-key fantasy. While Holo seems more flirtatious than usual, her relationship with Lawrence continues to develop nicely. The introduction of Norah adds a nice touch in keeping the pair on their toes. Though her impact isn’t readily noticeable, one would assume she will be back in a meatier role the next time out.
