There are few titles among the fantasy genre that can tell an enthralling story without having to resort to perilous quests, wicked lords, and epic battle scenes. But Spice and Wolf distinguishes itself from the usual fantasy tropes by building its premise around the chemistry of its two central characters. The common conceit is that a series with well crafted characters will write itself and Spice and Wolf is proof positive of this. Holo’s flirtatious nature meshed well with Lawrence’s straight laced personality as the two traded quips while still finding time to occasionally save the other from a tight pinch. While the first season played up the pair’s developing emotions for one another, Spice and Wolf’s second season brings their feelings to light in a griping piece of fantasy enchantment.

The first season established the two as awkward travelling partners brought together by circumstance, who slowly grew fond of the other’s company. As the second season opens, their relationship has progressed from sarcastic quips to budding romance. While they still banter frequently, there is genuine affection behind their words. The second season opens with a bang, with Lawrence and Holo experiencing their first real fight. Enter Amati: a rival of Lawrence’s for Holo’s affections. His pursuit of Holo puts their relationship to the test, further exploring their feelings.

While the first arc is relatively light in tone, the second that follows is a bit more grim and tests the two’s resolve more so than anything that has come before. Whereas Lawrence is finally on the verge of fulfilling his ambition of owning his own shop, Holo must make a decision that will have emotional ramifications on both of them. The resolution is both beautiful and draining and the perfect climax to the season.

As with the first season, the chemistry between Lawrence and Holo is what carries this set of episodes. Those who are hoping for more action and fantastical adventures will find none of that here. Romance and dialogue are the keys to Spice and Wolf’s success. The two lead’s verbal sparring is the main selling point that brings fans back for more, thanks to its charm and subtle hints. It is a testament to the writing that a show about love and economics can be so engaging.

The set comes in a Blu-ray/ DVD combo package that capture the finer details of the linear work and the backgrounds. Sadly though, the extras are light, with only two animated shorts and clean opening and closing music as well as the usual assortment of Funimation trailers.

If you weren’t impressed with the first season of Spice and Wolf, the second season won’t win you over. For those who are smitten with the characters and enchanted by Lawrence and Holo, the second season is more of the same, with extra weight and emphasis applied to their relationship that makes for another satisfying confection of romantic fantasy.
