In the midst of tired reboots, retcons, point ones, and schisms, I’ve found myself looking more and more forward to the summer comic book movie than the wonderful bastardized medium that has inspired Hollywood. Regardless, with each new Wednesday I (like most nerds) continue to zombie crawl my way to my L.C.S. (Hi, Alliance Comics and Games in Silver Spring, MD!) in an attempt to outwit predictability in favor of finding something all-new and all-different . And that is where One Shot comes in. Every week, I pick up a handful of #1s from my local comic book store and review them in a desperate attempt to reclaim my loose lost love…the funny book.

INFESTATION 2 #1
IDW
$3.99
As far as sequels go, nothing screams "trip to the well" quite like a returning crossover. Which is exactly what we have here with Infestation 2 #1.
The first Infestation was publisher IDW’s attempt to join in on the fun that DC and Marvel were having with superhero crossovers. While IDW was at a disadvantage because they didn’t have a sturdy selection of superheroes to pull from, they did have a cluster of licensed characters. If you ever wondered what would happen if the Ninja Turtles, Ghostbusters, GI Joe, and Transformers teamed up against a common enemy…then you must be a seven-year-old stuck in 1986.
All chiding aside, writer Duane Swierczynski (Cable) starts his Cross Marketing on Infinite Earths with a unique set up involving HP Lovecraft’s potentially dangerous influence on the collective fanboy subconscious. Such an interesting device raises my curiosity about the story’s overall subtext, but not enough to sit through the moralizing word balloons of Optimus Prime and Sergeant Slaughter.

NANCY IN HELL ON EARTH #1
IMAGE
$3.99
If Buffy Summers is the Nerf Herder of the supernatural slayers, then Nancy in Hell is the Lamb of God equivalent.
Filled with crotch shots, heaving bosoms, phallic symbols, and explosive chainsaw action, Hell on Earth is the sequel to 2011’s Nancy in Hell. Just like Buffy, Nancy Simmons (her alliterative sister-at-arms) is quick with a quip and a former cheerleader to boot. But it is the schlock-factor that separates the two.
Artist Enrique Lopez Lorenzana and writer El Torres know exactly what they have here and are not afraid to just let the gore and tits fly. Surprisingly though, the book pairs up all the nonsense with tongue-in-cheek dialogue and a shocking amount of biblical referencing. Conservative views aside, all this end of days stuff is appropriately unsettling and ballsy (and I’m not just talking about all the peek-a-boo loincloth shots). Especially when you consider the fact that this could’ve just as easily have been another bad girl/demon hunter comic.
