Invincible #44
By Hervé St-Louis
September 13, 2007 - 00:31
A Viltrumite female agent comes to Earth to explain their side of the story to Invincible and convince him to accept his legacy and help them conquer the Earth. Although weary about any Viltrumite, Invincible listens. But before he makes a decision on the Viltrumites’ appeal, a crisis occurs and only him and the Viltrumite agent can save the day. Is this episode of collaboration a sign of times to come for Earth’s young hero?
This is a straightforward story with a few subplots and some generous amount of characterisation at the beginning, followed by a “friendly misunderstanding” and then a big fight. Who could ask for anything more? All the elements are there. The pace of the story is so balanced and the plot so tight that there’s nothing one could say against this story. It won’t be remembered for its insight, but it will be remembered as a solid super hero tale.
Breaking the story like this makes it very reader-friendly and one would hope the creators and the publisher could try to market this title to younger readers. It’s not dumb down, but it’s quite interesting. The one thing that does worry me is that there is no sense of where this series is going. Sure, it has a great short term direction and great plots, but I have problems imagining this comic book series continuing in the same format for a few more years, without any major overhaul. I guess, I’ll have to wait for Kirkman to prove me wrong!
Ottley is a great artist that brings a lighter yet dynamic angle to the story. It feels like a world with primary pastel colours. Because the inking doesn’t cover much shadows, it reminds me of something like The Men in Black cartoon series, but in a good way!
