The front cover of Hal Jordan #30 suggests it’s one of the occasional Ethan Van Sciver issues. But no, this issue is drawn by Pat Zircher, and in my opinion, that’s a good thing – a REAL good thing. The past year or so he has drawn a number of issues of Action Comics, and I have compared him (favorably) with classic comic book artist Gil Kane. And Green Lantern was Gil’s bread and butter.

So this issue is very much a throwback to the good old days for me. Kane also did a brief run on Action Comics in the 1980s, so featuring the two characters side-by-side really works.

In the story, Hal returns to Earth to investigate reports of Sinestro, and runs into Superman, who claims to have bested him. But Hal has a sudden vision of a Parallax controlled Superman. Is it real? Is it an induced hallucination? Such answers are not forthcoming any time soon.

Although, with Hal back on Earth (however temporarily), we should probably expect to see him hook up with the current GLs of 2814, Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz. It would tie the two books more closely together, and the DCU as well. Unless… this all takes place during their recent visit to the past.

Rating: 8/10
