The Birds of Prey face off against the White Canary who’s better than lady Shiva at martial arts and capable of defeating each of them. But worse is the ploy the White Canary has set for the Birds of Prey, ruining their public and private identities. Will they ever recover from this public humiliation, after being beaten by the White Canary?
Only Gail Simone knows how to write a good martial art-related storyline which included layers of intrigues and has readers asking for more. Only she get the various characters portrayed in Birds of Prey and can depict them as capable fighters not sidekicks to any other male super hero. I missed the first issue, but I’m glad to have read this one. It’s a great place to start this series, which reboots the Birds of Prey even if you missed the first like me. Where Simone starts, there is no need to have read the first issue to be captured by the plot. It’s amazing because the plot is so simple. It’s a fight in a back alley with super martial artists and the police running after the. Simone always upsets the status quo and she does here too. Now I can’t wait to read the next issue. The magic is back and the only writer that can write Oracle, Black Canary and the Huntress is back and taking care of the characters she made popular again.
I’ve criticized Benes’ work in the Justice League of America series several times. But I can’t criticize him here. This is where he belongs and I’m happy to see him draw these pages. Yes, he continues to have severe problems with storytelling. The fight choreography is not the best it could be. There are chunk of action missing. It doesn’t all make sense. But I like how he draws the Birds. He’s trying for more grittiness, and I can’t complain. Now, Melo is not as good an artist and her pages are very inconsistent. I’m hoping she was but a small back up for this issue and not someone that will come back too often. She’s not ready yet to take the center stage in a series like that.
