Due to the heavy promotional material, All New X-Men #1 may have had it's ending spoiled, but that simple fact is the single worst part about the issue. The characterization is spot on, and Bendis' dialogue is of an immense quality. This script in particular seems very polished for Bendis' standards. Also, the artwork is incredible

This comic sets brand new standards for the already spectacular Stuart Immonen. The inks of Wade Von Grawbadger and colors of Marte Gracia really complement Immonen's penciling style. The colors in this issue are less bright, but given the tone of the story the situation seems appropriate.
A huge aspect of the comic that was not spoiled is the fact that the X-Man known as Beast is now dying. His only wish is to make the world a better place before he leaves. This serves as a great hook for an X-Men comic book. In the more recent issues of X-Men, the audience often seems alienated by the amount of characters and the lack of a central emotional through line. Kicking the series off with such a strong hook will prove useful to the audience of newcomers, and those that could possibly have felt alienated by the X-Men franchise as of late.

Cyclops escaping from prison so soon is a jarring transition, but if he indeed is serving as the antagonist for the book then Bendis indeed has a lot to play with. The two new mutants introduced are also endearing. The ending of the comic, which features the original X-Men being sucked out of time makes for an interesting dynamic between characters. Fortunately we need only wait a few weeks for the continuation of the story. Overall this is an incredibly solid issue even if it offers little in the way of surprise.

Rating: 8.5 /10
