Myriad #1

Myriad is an anthology featuring the work of several upcoming comic book creators. The first issue contains five stories. Most end in cliffhangers. The first story Chi Sai is about a female urban vigilante fighting hired thugs. The second story, Lineage is about fairies and sorcerers colonizing Earth in the 24th Century. In the third tale, The adventures of Molly Be Damned, pirates, knights and damsel in distress try to sway an old curse. Discount Stories, the fourth tale features an old war veteran having to earn a living at US Mart. Finally Frail, is about a beautiful girl, Nessane and new boyfriend Craig on their first date.
Some stories, such as Frail and Lineage were captivating and made me want to know more. The cliffhanger format works very well. Others, such as Chi Sai and Molly Be Damned, didn’t give enough information to care about the characters. In Chi Sai, there is no character readers can relate to. We know nothing about the vigilante nor the thugs. In Molly Be Damned, although very funny, the characters aged within the story, making their identity much harder to decipher. US Mart is the only complete story and its ending is quite touching.
The artwork varies tremendously. US Mart featured had the weakest team. Chi Sai, although well illustrated and with good storytelling, used the pencil wash style, which translates difficultly in black and white comics. Frail had the best penciller. Special mention must go to inker Brian Laframboise who inked two of the stories in this anthology. The Chi Sai pin up by the Sharp brothers reminded me a lot Bob Layton’s work. Anyone who reminds me of Bob Layton is a pro.
