Review: Ori and the Blind Forest Definitive Edition

Ori and the Blind Forest Definitive Edition is a stand alone, new version, of the original game with a few very welcomed features. Exploration in this metroidvania game has been streamlined and improved on. New areas and useful new abilities add different challenges and secrets for returning players. Those players will also be able to get this entire edition for an upgrade price of $5 - a wonderful gesture from the developers. With the new additions, tweaks, and low cost of entry, the Definitive Edition is an easy decision for any fans of this fantastic game.

Being able to fast travel is the most obvious and useful additions. This greatly helps streamline the game since many objectives require extensive back traveling. It makes picking up the last few collectibles less of a chore since you can warp relatively close to anything you want. Fast traveling is a great feature that is easily welcomed.

Black Root Burrows is the most interesting aspect of the Definitive Edition. This all new area dives more into some of the characters’ origins as well as giving the player two new abilities. This section of the map also introduces several additional gameplay mechanics that not only challenge you there but are also incorporated into the rest of the game. This gives the entirety or Ori’s world much more to search through. This new section easily warrants a return to the game.

It’s worth mentioning that my biggest complaint with the original Ori and the Blind Forest has been fixed. Before, you weren’t able to enter back into your save file upon beating the final boss. This has been altered to allow you to finish the game and still start back before the last event happens. What seems like a no-brainer makes a huge difference for this metroidvania game. Being unable to continue your exploration was unacceptable and this has been resolved here.

There aren’t a great deal of new additions but for $5 any returning fan will easily get their money’s worth. Ori and the Blind Forest Definitive Edition streamlines the game’s core exploring mechanic making it more enjoyable and easier to traverse. The same great game is here with useful and interesting new areas and abilities. This is a great update to one of the best games from last year.
