John Henry Irons tries to track down his missing niece through other members of Lex Luthor's failed "Everyman" project. Unfortunately, a serial killer called Kid Empty is going after Everyman alumni as well. There is also a guest shot by Superman in this comic but don't expect to see him flying to the rescue like he does on the cover. The story barely mentions superheroics at all. Irons rarely dons his Steel armour and none of the characters dresses up in spandex, unless they are doing it in a self-mocking manner. Milligan is clearly trying to shed some new light on how super-powers can affect normal people who aren't ready for them. The art complements his story by bringing everyone back down to Earth. Irons looks like a normal man instead of a more muscular version of Shaq. Even Superman doesn't look much larger than life. Everyone in this issue is thoroughly humanized. But the story is simply too slow. This is the second issue and the team isn't even together yet. This slow pace tends to make the story too dispiriting rather than suspenseful. In both art and story, this book feels like one of DC's ill-fated FOCUS line of comics. Remember those? 'Superpowers-- not superheroes' was their slogan. They had some great writing and art but they still all died quick deaths, probably because no one cared about their protagonists. Two stars out of five.
