This is the first issue of the Stardust Kid published by Boom Studios. Previous ones were published by Image Comics. It was created by the same team that created Abadazad at Crossgen, which was sold to Disney when the publisher folded. Cody and Alana are looking for the Stardust Kid in a forest created by the woman, and evil character that corrupted older ideals. Their younger friends, K.M and Nathaniel were ambushed by the river they were travelling into. All hope is lost for the kids, unless the Stardust kid shows up.

Although well into its fourth issue, this book is not difficult to pick up. It’s a adventure story that should be a Hollywood blockbuster in a few years. It’s that good and the story is straightforward. The magic in this book is the over abundant narration by DeMatteis who carries a light conversation with the reader, even anticipating his annoyance! It’s the type of feel good coming of age story that we don’t see too much in comics. Perhaps that’s why Disney was so quick to purchase Abadazad, which was of the same tone.

Mike Ploog’s work was created for fantasy adventures. Reading his story makes the abundant caption by DeMatteis acceptable. It’s a mix of illustrated books and sequential art. Of course through his pen, the story flows continuously. His marvellous creatures are always a pleasure to see. His work is not properly inked, but it doesn’t affect the quality of the book. The colourists have found the perfect nuances to extract the gray lines and mesh them with the colours.

8/10
