The Rann-Thanagar War # 5 (of 6)
DC Comics
WRITER: Dave Gibbons
ARTISTS/COVER: Ivan Reis, Mark Campos

Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Hawkwoman, the Green Lanterns, Adam Strange and Captain Comet fight off villains who are taking advantage of a war between the planets Rann and Thanagar. The huge cast and wide scope of this intergalactic war is starting to overwhelm the story. There is too much happening and not enough space-- even in outer space-- to tell what is happening. A major character is murdered but we get barely a page to feel the impact of the event, much less to mourn this once-popular figure. In fact the entire pacing of this issue seems rather inconsistent. The first part of the comic deals with Green Lantern Kilowogg trying to bring the ruined planet of Thanagar back to life. That's nice but shouldn't they be worried about the WAR first? Maybe that is why they had to pack so much in the second half of the issue. The art continues to be top-notch however and almost makes one overlook the few shortcomings in the story.
