"Horo Musuko" series to air in January

An animated TV series based on the manga "Horo Musuko" (aka "Wandering Son") will start airing at midnight Jan. 13 on Fuji Television Network's "Noitamina" program.

The manga series by Takako Shimura has been running in monthly Comic Beam magazine since 2002.

Dealing with gender identity, the story has earned wide recognition from fans and artists alike, who have eagerly awaited the anime adaptation.

In the story, Shuichi Nitori, a boy who wants to be a girl, meets Yoshino Takatsuki, a girl who wants to be a boy, when they are in elementary school. They move on to junior high school, where they face conflicts arising from human relationships.

Ei Aoki, director of the feature film adaptation of "Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners" and the animated TV series "Ga-Rei: Zero," took the helm. The script is by anime screenwriter Mari Okada, best known for "Toradora!" and "Black Butler." AIC Classic, a production division of studio Anime International Co., produced the series.

With the powerful lineup, "Horo Musuko" is certain to garner much interest in early 2011.

To build anticipation, an online "Horo Musuko" tribute illustration contest is now running.

Fans are encouraged to submit their illustrations with a short comment via Twitter, one of which will be selected for the week's best prize and be posted on the official website. In addition, the Takako Shimura and Ei Aoki awards will be given, as will the staff's best pick. Each winner will receive a prize.

To submit an illustration, first follow the official Twitter account "hourou_anime." Then add the hashtag "#hourou_pic" to tweets in which entry pictures are uploaded.
