A question I asked last issue was "can this book be saved?" Well after reading this issue I'd have to say…………..YES! This is more of what I wanted to see. The dialogue was on point. You'd think it was a completely different writer when you compare this issue with the first one. There were great interactions between Spider-man and Venom and when our web head stopped two thugs attempting a robbery. The Peter Parker narration was also leaps ahead of issue #1. Finally, the emotion was there, the characters' essence was within the words. This transformation didn't just stop with Peter/Spider-man, everyone had more of a feel to them. Detective Garret had worried trepidation, but also an air of determination. Eddie Brook, just oozed fear and Venom was a kaleidoscope of need, rage, longing and oh yeah, HUNGER :) .
Now the art, this is strange. I still don't think it's great. Certain thing's still bug me. Especially the women. They look like MEN. There really isn't much difference (we're talking faces here OK), this is even more noticeable with Aunt May and the female police captain. Then again it is growing on me. The scene of Spider-man in the rain sitting on the building is sooooo nice and Venom looks a whole lot better this time round.
Well the donse hat is off! This book has done what a leopard can't, it's changed its spots and it's all for the better. This isn't Bendis' Spider-man, but this is Spider-man! So if you want to see a different spin (pun intended) on a great character, come checkout the new improved (maybe soon to be Spectacular) Spider-man :) .
Report Card – B-/C+ (Talk bout turnaround. This book has suddenly got me wanting more)
