Wolves is the story of Cayden Richards, football star who gets expelled from school when he becomes aggressive towards a player from another team. Later, Richards almost rapes his girlfriend and later murders his parents in a fit of rage, as he transforms into a werewolf. On the run, Cayden discovers another reclusive  werewolf who tells him about the town of Lupine, home to several werewolves dynasties and the place where he might find answers about who he really is. Is Cayden man or animal?

This is a low budget film created for the same kind of fans that would enjoy the Twilight series f films. There are no vampires here, but there are many different werewolf families in Lupine that vie for control of Cayden. X-Men alumni Lucas Till plays the role of Cayden. His acting was a bit stiff and I felt that his voice as the narrator of the film was off. The story was predictable but not too gory or horrific. Yes, fans of Twilight will get their werewolf fix without having to be scared every second. So this film is more a teenage coming of age film than pure horror.

Wolves is set up to create a sequel so with the lead hero. Therefore, there are many interesting elements that focus more on the wolves in America than the particular mythology or explanation of how the werewolves came to be.  Often, vampire and werewolf films spend a lot of their time trying to explain and make sense of the mythological elements of their universe by appealing to scientific knowledge. By focusing more on the familial angle than the scientific or mythological, the film’s director attempted to flesh out his characters more.

The cinematography was decent but remember, this is a small budget film. There are limited transformation visual effects from man to werewolf. Only a few characters appeared as full wolves, which I attribute to a limited budget.

Rating: 7/10
