Vampires Unlimited: Wolves #1 follows two groups of characters.  First, a young vampire, “Shades,” spends an interesting evening with his small circle of vampire brethren that ends up with them playing crime busters.  Meanwhile, a sexy young couple has a dark secret (some of it hidden in the walls of the couple’s apartment), and heaven help anyone crazy enough to assault them or unlucky enough to stumble onto their dark secrets.

THE LOWDOWN:  When a comic book leaves you wanting more, that’s a fine feeling.  Sometimes, a comic leaves the reader wanting more simply because there is not enough content or because the narrative seems like too much of a fragment.  Wolves suffers from both.  This magazine’s “prologue” and “interlude” are just fine as introductions to an upcoming storyline, but the main body of this comic, which concerns “Shades” and his friends, is where the problem is.

The vampires seem interesting, but there really isn’t enough here in terms of story or page count, to really decide if they are interesting.  What Bart A. Thompson offers here is merely a tease in “pamphlet form” of what Thompson the writer has likely created as a graphic novel.  By the way, the art by Lynx Studios is good (ignoring a quibble here or there), and captures the kind of ensemble drama/dark fantasy vibe this story seems to have.

POSSIBLE AUDIENCE:  Readers of mature dark fantasy and horror similar to what the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic book series offers will like this.
