So, what’s been going on in the world of Wild Storm since last we visited. I’m not even sure when that was, I just know I haven’t missed it any. We have a war between two factions (we knew that) who are both manipulating the world political environment for the own ends (we knew that). Beyond that, nothing else has progressed.

If this issue is any indication, nothing will for the foreseeable future. The story inches along at an excrutiatingly slow pace, one that noted scribe Warren Ellis might describe as “job security.” As the final panel notes, “What the %$#@ just happened?” I don’t know either.

I don’t know how much DC Comics charges for Wild Storm, but whatever it is, it’s too much. Twenty interior pages, 106 panels, 28 panels with dialogue. I wouldn’t say that’s wimping out on the writing, because I presume Warren Ellis is providing some sort of art direction to Jon Davis-Hunt. Or maybe no. Perhaps he’s just leaving it to Hunt to fill in the gaps. It reminds me of the 1980s, when movie writers would be stumped for ideas, and they’d simply write, “Robin being funny,” and let Robin Williams improve for the cameras, and then write to suit his schtick.

It is so painfully obvious to me that this story would work better in film, in which case, let Ellis hump it through Hollywood looking for backers. Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, ANYBODY to keep him from foisting this movie-presented-in-comic-book-form on the comic book reading audience.
