Skywatch and IO are at each others’ throats (as usual), and the players are a challenge to identify; who’s on whose team? Not that it matters, really. I’ve been confused since my first issue, and matters have not improved – other than say things seem to be boiling to a head. Alliances are consummated, and battle lines are drawn.

This gives me reason to hope that the end of this train wreck is in sight. Maybe I’m just not hip to Warren Ellis’ storytelling methodology here, or maybe he writes over my head (I read comic books, so my tastes are not what one would call sophisticated). Or perhaps the monthly format is ill-suited for Ellis’ extended storytelling. It seems better suited for those that often wait for the trade, so for DC to continue the series suggests somewhere someone must be doing something right.

But Ellis and artist Jon Davis-Hunt have impressed me by remaining on the book for 18 issues, which is a quite the feat in this current age comic books. I love that they’ve made that commitment to a steady paycheck the narrative, and seem prepared to ride this series as far as it goes.

As for me, I can stick with a while longer. But if it doesn’t resolve itself in some manner soon, I will probably have to bail on it indefinitely. I hate to do that, but after some much confusion and misdirection, it’s easy to run out of fresh things to say.
