Norman Osborn races Dr. Henry Pym to get the famed Cosmic Cube at the Pegasus Projects’ labs. Osborn is hoping that with the Cosmic Cube, all his dreams will come true. Pym has to find a way to stop Osborn from getting the Cube and make the already power man omnipotent. Elsewhere the Avengers are battling the Absorbing man who also has the power of the cube in his possession. Who will own the Cube?
I guess it took a Norman Hammer appearance to make this series interesting again. It worked. Osborn is the perfect opponent for Pym. Both are super smart but considered flawed and both are leading teams of Avengers. However, here, it seems that Pym is clearly the smarter of the two while Osborn seems to be the better leader. Unlike when Osborn was pitted against Reed Richard or Tony Stark, here the fight seems even-matched. I like how even when in possession of the Cosmic Cube, Pym was still a hero and did not abuse his power unlike Osborn. Speaking of hero, this is the second time in a major storyline in this series where Pym was almost saving the day and being a hero only to have someone else outshine him. Granted that Pym did figure out who the villain pulling all the strings was, so he’s was not completely outdone. I like how various Avengers reverted back to their old or true identities. Slott has a good handle on these various characters and their histories.
Pham has become one of the reasons this series is so particular and he is the other half of it. How he draws these various characters is growing on me. Yeung is a great inker for him this issue as he makes everything look clean and enhance quite well Pham’s natural talent. This series really has improved the last two issues and should no longer be considered the weaker of the Avengers titles.
