The second DVD release of SlugTerra, the series featuring young adventurer Eli Chang taking over his long gone father to protect a subterranean realm from the evil Doctor Black continues with five new episodes. Instead of exploring the dynamic with Doctor Black, these new episodes offer single stories that explore the realm of SlugTerra and introduce many friendly and fiendish characters.

Although standalone stories, what I liked in the five new episodes released to DVD is that they didn’t reuse some of the standard fodder plots seen in many other cartoons and television series. For example, the bootcamp for slugs story was original. Our heroes were told to relax and enjoy themselves while their slugs trained. Similarly, the zombie in the mall story with the mall cop was an original idea.

As I mentioned in a previous review, what I like the most about SlugTerra is the variety of characters introduced every episodes. Unlike in 2D animation, any new character introduced adds to the complexity and budget of a series. Granted, the body types of characters are mostly the same, they still feature enough individuality. What I’m not as thrilled with is the running cycles used by the animators. The characters seem to float and jump huge gaps. Whenever their feet touch the ground, you’re painfully reminded that you’re watching a 3D animated show that doesn’t have the same budget as a Pixar film.

Now that the toys and other collectibles related to SlugTerra are out, it viewers that stayed on the side waiting for this series to pick up more steam should peak in and enjoy it. It’s also really kids friendly.

Rating: 8/10
