Abel lets Cain slip away in order to save Kira, his partner in the war against the rest of the psychopathic products of the Black Forest Project. Chaos builds on the streets of Manhattan though as Cain's men wreak havoc and kill, seemingly at will. Cain has a even deadlier special surprise for Abel and Kira though...

In the first issue of Savage Things that isn't quite as gripping as the previous three issues have been, writer Justin Jordan reveals a little more about the two opposing former Black Forest friends, and builds upon Kira's character by slyly revealing that she herself might register a little high on the sociopathic manipulation scale than Abel might realize. Either way, the issue feels rushed a bit, and ends a little too abruptly. Most likely to accommodate a preview of the upcoming sequel to John Ridley's The American Way.

There's little more praise that I can heap upon Ibrahim Moustafa's artwork in Savage Things. The action in this issue is specifically physical in different ways from the the previous three as the highlighted physical exchanges between Abel and Kira are particularly telling and divergent from the physical confrontations between Abel, Cain, Kira, and Cain's men. The same tension is there but Ibrahim's layout is quite different, hinting at an intimacy shared through violence that mirrors the mental games the two most likely are playing on one another. As much as I hope Savage Things gets the big screen treatment, Moustafa pulls off moments like this that can only be done properly in graphic novel art format that will forever make Savage Things unique.

Halfway through the series and Savage Things is keeping my interest, and still freaking me out. I can't ask for anything more.
