For someone that doesn’t know a thing about Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke, this issue doesn’t really tell you much. Other than he’s a mercenary / assassin and had two sons. Normally this would be a problem, but when you have Priest on writing duties, everything is fine! He’s a chess master and his subtlest move always carries meaning with it. We learn that Deathstroke has a contract to kill Clock King. There are also hints that he might be being blackmailed to do this. And an old friend might be behind it all. Definitely enough to draw you back for issue 2 next month!
The art team of Jason Paz and Carlo Pagulayan has done a great job of bringing Priest’s words to life. The movement, the colours, the hues, depth, it all comes together in a way that draws you into the story. There’s only two things that are a bit of a distraction. One being Clock King’s threads, which isn’t really down to the team. The second is faces; they all come across as a bit basic and lacking in character. The exception is actually Clock King, who’s face really tells a story.
As LL said, “don’t call this a come back, cause I’ve been here for years” Priest has shown that ring rust is a myth. He’ll have you hooked on Deathstroke, that’s right, Deathstroke, before the issue is up!
