I expected a fight that would end rather quickly but Christopher Priest drew on Deathstroke’s classic cunning and ability to deal with any opponent in his portrayal of the fight against Superman. Smartly, he introduced an armour for Slade Wilson that repels attacks. My only question is why didn’t Superman change his mode of attack after a while and just targeted Deathstroke’s head?
I’d like to comment on something that I have observed in Priest’s writing which has changed over the years. Priest, while remaining as talkative as other writers allows for non-verbal narrations and sequences to a greater extent than in the past. I like when writers let the story tell itself visually.
In the visual department, Larry Hama, an old pro at wordless comic book storytelling, continues to guide the beautiful pencils by Carlo Pagulayan. Hama is the perfect foil for Priest. They are both old timers in comics who are willing to let visuals do the heavy storytelling lifting. Pagulayan is a fine artist who while he many not handle storytelling as naturally as Hama, can render beautiful scenes.
