This issue focuses on Helena Bertinelli, the Huntress, as she reflects on her life – or lives, if you prefer. Her life as the daughter of a master criminal, her life as a crime fighter, and her life as part of a team that is making a difference on the streets of Gotham City. While she manages to reach a level of understanding, what she fails to realize is how intertwined her identities may be.

The Calculator is the criminal version of Oracle – a scheming, precise master strategist. And he has a score to settle with the Birds, and is prepared to remove anyone who gets in his way. And that strategy seems to be working, as the Birds mourn the loss of an ally. Meanwhile, Calculator is building his allies, beginning with Maria Bertinelli’s Helena’s mother.

All of this adds up to a complex plot that is sure to stretch over several issues. It has already tested the bonds of the Birds themselves, and I won’t be surprised if all three of them don’t come through this radically different than when they started. Partnerships are bound to be challenged. Let’s hope they’re up to it.

It’s only recently that I’ve begun reading Birds of Prey in earnest. I’d reviewed a handful of issues, but a more thorough perusal has me thinking it’s one of DC Comics under-appreciated titles. The three team members bring passion, intellect and charm to the dynamics, making up for one another’s shortcomings. I look forward to enjoying more.
