Fantastic Four #501-502 - "Fifth Wheel"
By Kevin Scott
January 5, 2004 - 15:59
This is the aftermath of the Fantastic Four's terrifying battle with Dr. Doom. What happens now, what were the effects and ramifications on Marvels first family? Well the only way you can find out is by turning the page.
In this arc it's good to see that there were ramifications from the whole Unthinkable situation. As that makes a lot of sense and makes stories more appealing. Waid also gives us some really good philosophy and ideas on certain subjects, like being trapped. They do make you think and view the situation in a different context. For some reason though, the story seemed a little flat. Even though Johnny takes Reed on a adventure of such and we glimpse a different side of Mr Fantastic.
Casey Jones' art was OK and he made Reed, Sue and Johnny look different in regards to their ages. The colours are bold, which seems a bit off but isn't really a problem. The thing that really stuck out I thought was the fact that the characters looked like they were superimposed onto the backgrounds. This mad it really weird looking at stuff and having it feel right. And Reeds scar still doesn't seem to be the shocking disfigurement that it is supposed to represent.
