CNN takes a look at the new superheroes who are taking on the world in comic books and a new animated television series in this report on the "The 99." The Muslim superheroes derive their power from gem stones imbued with ancient knowledge, and can only succeed if they work together.

The creator said he wanted to his characters to be inspired by Islam in their fight against evil, and hopes that the series can be a voice for an alternative to the extremist versions of Islam that have dominated the headlines. The series' plot lines avoid explicit religious and political themes for more generic and universal good deeds, such as landmines in Cambodia.
