The debut issue earned her a “Harvey Award,” so Sophie Crumb is back with BELLY BUTTON COMIX #2. Some of the whimsy of the first issue is missing this time, but Ms. Crumb is rapidly becoming a first rate “girl” autobiographical cartoonist. Her ability to convey the atmosphere and aroma of two drug addicts living on the edge of college campus life is impressive. This is comix for people who enjoy independent movies and stories about real people with verisimilitude that zings.
Her anxious, deft line work is closer to current alt-cartoonists than it is to her revered father’s work (I don’t need to name him, do I), and Sophie’s angst-laden stories remind me of her mother’s work (must I name her?). Sophie is one to watch. B+
I am best friends with Miguel to this day, and he with Sophie. The caricature is so surreal. Just boiled down surface elements. The view of an addict in the throes. Beautiful.
