The Mighty Avengers #3

The Avengers are still fighting the robotic female who it turns out is Ultron, something Doctor Hank Pym created years ago and that has plagued every version of the Avengers’ since. The fight seems hopeless and unless a solution is found Ultron may succeed in taking over the entire Earth. Does the Avengers still have a trick up their sleeves?

This issue continues to introduce the current team of Avengers through flashback that are related to the main plot. Given that the main plot is weak. It’s just a fight.  The nuances given to the characters within their thought bubbles and their conversations are golden nuggets. For example, Wonderman is no longer the big shot of the team, Sentry his. Wonderman seems to resent that and want to prove himself.

There is a subplot with Tigra that indicates that after being a spy during the Civil War, she may be up to no good again. I bet she’s a Skrull! The Black Widow is given some good screen time and all her experience and anger finally allows her to shine this issue. She really is the best at what she does. Ultron’s motivations are unclear, but Bendis hints at something more cosmic than the usual con quest of planet Earth. I wish he would elaborate on that. There’s a good premise for a sequel there.

Cho’s work continues to charm with strong compositions and character designs. He also does quite well in the fight sequence. It’s rare to see an accomplished artist master both rendering and storytelling at once. Here he gives the Avengers a wide-screen budget for a comic book series that should be a television series. It’s really impressive that he can keep up the quality unaided.
