The Binquirer isn't just an
asinine pun; it's also your best source for pop-culture news. Here at
the Bin, we're dedicated to making your reading experience more
fulfilling, and our new aggregated news articles, The Binquirers, will
keep you up to date on comic books, films, video games, and more in one
frequent and concise package. Enjoy our latest installment below!
DC Comics:
Batman: Year One continues the Earth One tradition of dominating graphic
novel sales. The Batman book came out on top in July according to
Nielsen's Bookscan ratings system.
Marvel Comics:
A new Marvel NOW! teaser breaks news of what could be a
Deadpool
series (the teaser says "CHIMICHANGAS," so who else could it be?)
written by...
Brian Posehn?! The fantastic artist
Tony Moore is onboard
and
Gerry Duggan is scripting comedian Posehn's Deadpool. Hopefully this means
the humor in Deadpool might be more, let's say, humorous. Like the other NOW! books that have just recently been teased, this one will be out in November.
More Comics:
Mark Millar's
Nemesis 2 Icon series has been delayed until January.
As
Bleeding Cool reports, a shipment of Howard Chaykin's Image comic
Black Kiss II #1 was confiscated and held by UK Customs this week. The comic book features some pretty demented and sexually explicit imagery, so it might have been a case of mistaken identity (imagine the investigating Customs officer: "Is this some deviant pornography?"), but UK Customs has recently announced that they will be releasing the subversive shipment of magazines and all is not right with the world again. The comic hit stands this Wednesday, but will ostensibly go on sale next week for long-suffering UK fans.
Film and Television:
Deadline reports that
Chris Eccleston, of Doctor Who and 28 Days Later fame, is in talks to
play the villain Malekith the Accursed in
Thor: The Dark World, the 2013
sequel to 2011's Thor. The Dark Elf Malekith was introduced to comics
during the lauded Walt Simonson era of The Mighty Thor, first appearing
in issue 344. Simonson also gave Malekith one of the coolest Thor
villains, Kurse, as an underling. Could we see casting for Kurse soon? I
hope so!
Director
Bryan Singer confirmed the title for the upcoming X-Men: First
Class sequel. The film will be called
X-Men: Days of Future Past,
according to
IGN. "Days of Future Past" was a two-issue story, found in
Uncanny X-Men #141-142, that chronicled an alternate future where the
X-Men's failure to diffuse a Brotherhood of Evil Mutants plot catalyzed a
brutal Sentinel crackdown on mutant kind. The film is due in 2014.
Director Ridley Scott is determined to forge ahead with
Prometheus 2, with actors Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace already signed on to star in the sequel to this year's sci-fi epic.
The Hollywood Reporter dished news that Scott and Fox's president of production Emma Watts are actively looking for new writers for the film saga, however. The line they're currently using is that Damon Lindelof, a screenwriter of Prometheus, might not be available to script further installments of the series. It's hard to believe that this isn't a genteelism for saying Lindelof was passed over. This shouldn't come as a surprise. While Prometheus was breathtaking visually, its plot was muddled, cursory, and slapdash. Fingers crossed they find a fantastic screenwriter this time around. This film won't see the light of day until late 2014 or early 2015, barring any delays.
Len Wiseman's
Total Recall remake lands in theaters tomorrow. The film has a whopping 20% positive review aggregate on
Rotten Tomatoes. Ouch! I can't say I didn't see that coming several months ago. Also, you can usually tell a film company is tremulous about criticism when critics' reviews don't pop up online until the Thursday before the film is released in the States.
