Word from Italy brings very sad news. Illustrator extraordinaire and industry legend Sergio Toppi has passed away at the age of 79. The prolific artist and visionary began his career as an advertiser in the 60s, but went on create several iconic comic strips and other graphical non-fiction works, such as Blues and Little Big Horn. He had made over twenty books in the last two decades.

Film and Television:

Adi Shankar's production company 1984 Private Defense Contractors is set to produce a film based on Rob Liefeld's Image property, Bloodstrike, about an undead squad of black-ops heavy-hitters. Liefeld is also taking a role as producer, and responded to the news break by saying that the film would be R-rated. Looking at Shankar's producer credits, which include The Grey and the upcoming Dredd 3D, a solid R-rating isn't a stretch of the imagination.

Comic book writer Mark Millar has announced that Joe Carnahan, whose Daredevil proposal was recently turned down by FOX, will be directing the film adaptation of Millar's Nemesis. The Nemesis film has been in limbo for several months at FOX, but studio executives have met with Carnahan to discuss the reality of making the movie. Millar's Secret Service is also being optioned, with Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughan in line to direct.

Director Tony Scott, brother of Ridley Scott, passed away on Sunday. The cause of his death is allegedly suicide. While many reports claimed that Scott had taken his own life because of an inoperable brain tumor, Scott's family denies that he had cancer. Scott directed such films as Top Gun, Crimson Tide, True Romance, Man on Fire, Beverly Hills Cop 2, and The Taking of Pelham 123. Scott was 68.

Pioneering comedian Phyllis Diller has also passed away, at the age of 95. Diller died on Monday, reportedly peacefully. She championed the role of women in comedy when female stand-up comedians were something no one in show business had ever even considered seriously.
