A mysterious killer is using television to force people to act out their murderous fantasies. Oh yeah, Superman and Batman make a cameo too.
The fact that the cover plays up the appearance of Batman gives you an idea of how troubled this title is. The regular cast are not interesting enough and they apparently realise that the best way to attract the casual reader is the guest appearance of a big-name like Batman. Of course, when the reader sees what a minor role the Batman has in this issue, they will likely walk away in disgust and never buy another issue of INFINITY INC.
Which is not to say the writing is dull. The plots are interesting, the villain is interesting, even the way the story unfolds is interesting. But there is little to make people care about this comic. The Infinity Inc. members are a whiney lot and the supposed face of the book, John Henry Irons-- a.k.a. Steel, rarely appears in the book and never appears in costume. It doesn't help that the creative team give absolutely no details on what happend in earlier issues. Nor do they attempt to introduce the cast to new readers.
The art is detailed and original but it is also cold and rather sterile. Even one potentially frightening murder scene just looks confusing. A major character gets knocked out and dragged off to some horrible fate... and yet, the way it is drawn, it is just hard to care.
This book gives off this vibe about being embarassed to be a superhero book. So they intentionally keep the lead characters out of costume and make them behave in an un-heroic manner. Well if they wanted a VERTIGO title, why didn't they just make this a VERTIGO title in the first place? It probably has sales figures closer to the VERTIGO titles anyway.
This issue gets two stars out of five.
