A giant bullet is heading toward our planet with clandestine passenger Kitty Pryde onboard. The only solution: a gathering of Earth’s mightiest heroes. If only they were not incapacitated… On the Breakworld, Colossus’ dilemma is simple: should he accomplishes the prophecy and destroy the planet or should he instead try to save it? But with Wolverine’s help, another solution might be possible.

Whedon’s ability to write really shines in this conclusion to his 25 issues run on this title. His witty dialogues, unpredictable plot twists and intelligent characters developments are really at their peak here. And what a grand finale he offers us! Even if I knew that the heroes would win in the end and that Kitty would not make it out alive (it had been leaked in another x-men title) I still did not know how and why. It really makes me wish it is not the last time he tackles the Marvel universe. I think he would make a fine Spider-Man writer.

The art is also really outstanding. John Cassaday’s depiction of the various characters since the beginning of the series has been the best I have seen in years. His semi-realistic style is perfectly suited for this kind of story. If only they could they could print this title in oversized format like they to do in Europe with his other works, we could appreciate his talent even more. It was also interesting to see him draw other Marvel characters.

Laura Martin’s colours are very appropriate. I don’t usually like when someone uses only one tone in a panel to establish a mood but since I didn’t notice it until my second reading I guess she did a good job.

So was this issue worth the wait? I have to answer yes to that question. Quality takes time to accomplish and I prefer to wait a couple of months than see a fill-in arc or inconsistencies in the art. This issue marks the end of a collaborative team but I think they already are assured a place in the X-Men hall of fame.

Rating: 9/10
