The X-Men have been kidnapped and are on their way to a world called Breakworld where a prophesy claims Peter Rasputin, also known as Colossus, will be the bane of their world. The X-Men’s presence on Breakworld is part of a huge plot involving the American Government’s space agency in a drive to save the Earth from an alien attack. But is bringing Colossus right into the lion’s den the right strategy?
Whedon steps into territory that is quite familiar to him, and brings in the X-Men for a ride. Right now, it remains to be seen whether he will succeed in meshing the two styles, but so far, it’s good. Previous arcs were interesting but dragged too long. The one criticism I do have is that even for the Marvel universe, the technology at the disposal of the US government when it comes to space travel is astounding.
The artwork is fine although the alien technology doesn’t seem so alien. The characters’ faces and bodies are great to look at. However, some characters’ face, like Colossus, have a tendency to change from frame to frame. The cover of this issue was awful and looked like anything from the 1990s. One would think that with such a great artist, more care would be used to provide stronger covers.
