Houghton Mifflin's "The Best American" series has been supplying readers with definitive samplings from the pantheon of literature for several years now, and in 2008 series editors Jessica Abel and Matt Madden shone their spotlight upon the wonderful world of comics books and strips.
The Best American Comics 2008 is another fine sampling from the publisher, underscoring some of the comic industry's pick of the litter with excerpts from contemporary and relevant commentaries like
Dykes to Watch out For, Love and Rockets, a few selections from
The New Yorker and
The New York Times, and NBM Publishing's
War-Fix. This anthology also includes fantastic comic-literature pieces like passages from Nick Bertozzi's
The Salon and another NBM book,
The Saga of the Bloody Benders, by the master of graphic mystery Rick Geary. This eclectically satisfying collection is rounded out by several humor strips like
Underworld and
Life in Hell.
An appetizer for the main course of full length books alluded to therein, this is a fantastic book for fans of contemplative societal introspects and comic books in general: a great coffee table book.
