Zorro #1 Scars!


This graphic novel complies the first three issues of Papercutz’s Zorro. Intended for an all-age audience, the art and pace of the story is modelled after Japanese Mangas. In this story, Zorro and Eulalia Bandini, a beautiful waitress, are on the run from corrupted Spanish authorities. They run into Ripklaw and his band of fur hunters who are trying to kill a couple of cartographers in the Yellow Stone area.

Although Eulalia Bandini’s face is scarred and that much of her characterisation and the theme of the story relate to scarring and its effects, there are no resolutions to this subplot. The rest of the story is but a chase with high pitch action that should entertain kids and their dad. The heroes and their allies care for one another, unlike the one-dimensional villains, who don’t seem to offer much of a threat to anyone.

Sidney Lima’s work is light and perfect for that age group. In the bigger tabloid comic book issues, his art did not fit as the inking was too thick. Here, in the reduced Manga pocket format, his work looks crisp. His facial expressions are fun. It seems that some of the goriest elements were cleaned up for the graphic novel version of the comic book. The originals weren’t disturbing and the cleaning up of some of the action doesn’t make much sense in some scenes where we expect to see a man near death.
